Peer Mentoring Program Specialist, Graduate Assistantship: Clarion Campus

Position Summary: The Graduate Assistant (GA) for the Peer Mentoring Program will play a crucial role in supporting the overall function and success of the program. This position is designed to provide graduate students with valuable experience in mentorship, leadership, effective communication skills, and student development within a higher education setting. The GA will work closely with the program coordinator, faculty, and undergraduate students to facilitate the mentorship process, organize events, and provide resources to support protégés (new students). This is an in-person position, with no remote work. This position will begin in the fall of 2024.
Key Responsibilities:

Mentor Recruitment and Training:
- Assist in the recruitment and selection process for undergraduate peer mentors.
- Coordinate and facilitate training sessions for peer mentors on mentorship best practices, communication skills, and campus resources.

Mentor-Protégé Pairing:
- Collaborate with the program coordinator to match undergraduate protégés with appropriate peer mentors based on interests, goals, majors, and backgrounds.
- Maintain accurate records of mentor-protégé pairs and monitor the progress of mentoring relationships.

Program Development and Implementation:
- Assist in developing program goals, objectives, and activities to enhance the mentoring experience for participants.
- Plan and execute events, workshops, and activities to promote mentorship, academic success, and personal growth among protégés.
- Support the “FYS 1000: Navigating the First Year at PennWest” course by facilitating activities, providing academic and personal support, and fostering a welcoming and inclusive classroom environment.

Resource Coordination and Administrative Support:
- Identify and compile resources, both on-campus and off-campus, to support protégés in areas such as academic advising, career exploration, and personal development.
- Create and distribute informational materials and guides to mentors and proteges.
- Provide administrative support to the program coordinator, including scheduling meetings, maintaining program records, and responding to participant inquiries.

Data Collection and Assessment:
- Collect data and feedback from mentors and protégés to assess the program’s effectiveness and identify improvement areas.
Qualifications:
- Enrollment in a graduate program at PennWest.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse populations of students, faculty, and staff.
- Previous experience in mentoring, advising, or student leadership is preferred.
- Familiarity with campus resources and support services.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Commitment to promoting student success and academic excellence.
Hours and Compensation: This is a part-time position requiring approximately 20 hours per week, with flexibility based on program needs. Per university policies, compensation will be provided as an hourly wage.
