The Chemistry Department is seeking students to work as a laboratory assistant.
Laboratory assistants will gain valuable laboratory and safety skills. They will work with instrumentation and core competencies useful in a wide range of occupations. Our lab prepares reagents, chemicals, glassware, and laboratory supplies to all lab courses within the department. Students applying must be a chemistry or biology major, unless otherwise approved by the department chairperson.
JOB DUTIES
ü Laboratory Experiment Preparation
o Obtaining stock chemicals, glassware, small instruments, and other supplies from the stockroom/department locations.
o Maintaining weekly laboratory maintenance log sheets for individual laboratories. This includes stocking common materials in a particular laboratory and identifying whether there are any safety hazards that need to be addressed.
ü Post-Laboratory Experiment Clean-Up
o Provide timely clean-up of the laboratory experiments in preparation for future preparations.
o Waste Management – Withdraw and transfer specified waste containers and corresponding records to waste management location. Maintain, audit, and report that correct chemicals are going into proper waste containers, as labeled by the waste maintenance log sheets.
ü Laboratory Equipment
o Withdraw specified used glassware, materials and instruments and transfer to cleaning location and storage locations. Clean glassware and put back into their proper assigned places.
ü Instrumentation Maintenance
o Ensure that all instruments are monitored for optimum use and preparedness during experimentation.
ü Office Duties
o Run errands, collect mail, and answer office telephone for the department secretary, and laboratory technician as needed.
